ICNC's Three Pathways to Growth
We are more than just an incubator; we are a comprehensive economic engine for Chicago’s Near West Side. Our work is built around a dynamic, three-part system designed to address the needs of businesses at every stage — from culinary startups to established manufacturing firms, and the community partners who support them.
The pathways below represent the full scope of our commitment: providing dedicated space, cultivating local talent, and connecting essential capital.
The Hatchery
The Hatchery is our non-profit food and beverage incubator, providing entrepreneurs with state-of-the-art commercial kitchen space, business mentorship, and access to capital to grow their culinary ventures.
Make City is ICNC's modern manufacturing incubator, offering 416,000 square feet of affordable industrial space and comprehensive business support for over 100 growing small businesses in Chicago.
Invest in Impact is your direct pathway to fueling Chicago’s economic prosperity, connecting corporate partners with measurable CSR initiatives and empowering individual donors to cultivate skilled local talent and sustain our community’s businesses.
"We could not function and grow without the continued support of Make City. The team is always quick to respond and the facility management crew has been responsive and helpful when needed. Communication from the incubator has been excellent."
Hatchery Entrepreneur
“I really appreciate everything The Hatchery has supported me with. I was able to get my business in a strong position to succeed thanks to their guidance, availability, and willingness to answer every question along the way.”
Specialty Food Entrepreneur
"There is nothing to compare with the personal touch and caring that the team brings to the cohort. I feel seen and supported—that’s half the battle when the going gets tough. Thank you so much."
For more than five decades, ICNC has been driving inclusive economic growth on Chicago’s West Side, supporting entrepreneurs, protecting industrial businesses, and creating spaces where innovation thrives. From advocacy and workforce development to business incubation and community partnerships, our evolution reflects a continued commitment to empowering people and strengthening neighborhoods.
1967-1984
Founding and Early Years
Formed by local business owners to combat crime and urban decline, ICNC began as an advocate for Chicago’s Near West Side. By the early 1980s, it launched Make City, one of the nation’s first and largest manufacturing incubators, creating a thriving hub for small businesses.
1984
Expanding the Mission
In 1984, ICNC established the Kinzie Industrial Development Corporation (KIDC), a charitable 501(c)(3) subsidiary, enabling the organization to expand beyond advocacy into community development and broader economic impact.
1998-2010
Advocacy, Business Support & Workforce Development
ICNC helped secure Planned Manufacturing District status for the Kinzie Industrial Corridor, protecting local industry. It later launched Small Business Development Center and International Trade Center services, offering business planning, capital access, and export support, alongside pioneering workforce programs like EMT training for women.
2015-2018
Development of The Hatchery
Recognizing the food and beverage sector’s rapid growth, ICNC partnered with Allies for Community Business to develop The Hatchery, a $34 million, state-of-the-art incubator in Garfield Park. Opened in 2018, it connects emerging food entrepreneurs with established industry leaders like Ingredion and Griffith Foods.
2019
Launch of the Impact Culinary Program
In collaboration with Chef Rick Bayless and Allies for Community Business, ICNC introduced the Impact Culinary Program, a hands-on training initiative that helps local residents build culinary skills and careers in the food and hospitality industry.
2020-2023
Restructuring and Strategic Shift
ICNC streamlined operations by merging with KIDC and transitioning to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. It assumed full management of The Hatchery and refocused on entrepreneurship, incubation, and community impact, cementing its role as a cornerstone of West Side economic development.
